"How do you want to be remembered?"

Oct 05, 2009

An odd question. Isn't it?

Is it so basic as "do you want to be famous?" If so, to the end of lionization, or fellowship? If the pointless former, does the source of exaltation matter? Could it be the slightly improved "how do you want others to perceive your ideas?" Is it also then "what kind of intellectual culture do you hope will prevail?" Is it self-esteem looking for validation, or mind looking for reasonable consideration?

"For often in battle there is no doubt that if a man will throw away his arms, and fall on his knees before his pursuers, he may escape death; and in other dangers there are other ways of escaping death, if a man is willing to say and do anything. The difficulty, my friends, is not in avoiding death, but in avoiding unrighteousness; for that runs faster than death."

What if autocratic fascists won the day? What would it mean to be popularly exalted or popularly despised? How would you want to be remembered? It seems the considerate answer goes something like "I don't give a goddamn."
