“[American policy makers and citizens] do not make real judgements about foreign policy. Instead, we root for one country or another, like so many football fans. This is a failing of Right and Left alike. Moise Tshombe defends private enterprise and calls himself an anti-communist; the Young Americans for Freedom hold a rally for him. The Syrian dictatorship calls itself socialist - and American radicals embrace this tin-horn police state.
This kind of response to rhetoric is juvenile. It is also dangerous, because it is the enemy of clear thought. A country is not a democracy because it calls itself one; it is not socialist because it assails imperialism; it is not a friend of America because it throws our enemies in jail.”
